10 Reasons to Sign Up For Summer Reading in July

Posted on July 10, 2015 by Library Staff in Library Blog, Library Services, News

Just because the Library District’s annual summer reading challenge started in June, doesn’t mean it’s too late to sign up now. Maybe you’ve been in summer classes, maybe you forgot it was happening, maybe you’ve been visiting grandma, or maybe you were abroad (like me!). It doesn’t really matter why you haven’t signed up yet. What matters is there is still time to do it! The program goes through August 9, and you can log hours any time up till that point. Not convinced? Here are 10 reasons why I think you should sign up… TODAY!

1

  1. You can do all online!
This year, the whole program has been digitized. Start by going online to http://poudrelibraries.org/srp. Choose the program you would like to join and create an account. Then all you have to do is keep track of the hours you read. The only time you have to come into the library is to pick up your reading prize after you’ve logged 10 hours. Pretty cool huh? Oh, and because this year’s theme is “Discover Your Power,” you get to choose a super hero avatar.2
  2. No Internet Access, No Problem
If you don’t have access to the internet, you can still participate by picking up one of those cool old-school reading logs at your local library. 😉3
  3. FroYo!
What does FroYo have to do with summer reading? Anyone who logs ten hours of reading this summer earns a TCBY coupon for free yogurt. Children and teens will also receive a free book of their choice. Adults will receive a $2.00 off book coupon from the Poudre River Friends of the Library.4
  4. More Prizes!
If you’re one of those go above-and-beyond types, you can also participate in the STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering, art, and math) challenge. Complete an activity from each STREAM category to earn up to six online badges or stickers. For each online badge or sticker you earn, you’ll be entered into a drawing for special prizes.5
  5. The Power Readers Club
If you’re one of those really-go-above-and-beyond types, you have the chance to join the Power Readers Club. Did you know that if you log 100 or more hours of reading before August 9, you’ll be invited to the Power Readers’ Party held at the end of the summer?6
  6. The Summer Slide
That sounds super fun until you realize it’s what researchers call the learning losses young people experience when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. Research has shown that students typically score lower on standardized test at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer. Thankfully, summer reading is an easy solution to this problem.7
  7. Zero to 100-years-old
It doesn’t matter how young or how old you are. Anyone can join the summer reading program! Babies and toddlers, kids, teens, and adults are encouraged to sign up.8
  8. Book Suggestions
If you’ve created an account online, you can receive personalized book suggestions based on the type of book you want to read.9
  9. Summer is HOT
It’s July now, you know that heat is only going to get worse. What’s better than finding a comfy spot to read in an air conditioned room when it’s 98 degrees out? Nothing. Except maybe eating ice cream while you sit in a comfy spot, in an air conditioned room, reading a book.10
  10. Because I said so.
You need a 10th reason to join the summer reading program??? How about because this really adorable corgi puppy said so. He’s asking so nicely! How can you deny those ears? So. Much. Cute.Photo credit: Daniel Stockman

Happy logging!
