See the Movie, Read the Book

Posted on May 27, 2021 by Library Staff in Book Recommendations, Library Blog

Did you know that the Poudre Libraries offer seven different “See the Movie, Read the Book” DVD collections? These sets include movies that are based on books, and each one contains six to ten films in one case. We have a collection for everyone and every genre: kids, teens, adults, and even “the classics”. This summer, why not host a movie & book club with your family or friends?! Let’s find out – is the book always better than the movie?

Check out these titles in the library’s collection that you can enjoy both on-screen and on the page – plus some bonus formats like audiobook and eBook!

For Adults:

See the Movie, Read the Book Movie Collection Volume 1 is for adults and includes The Devil Wears Prada, a delightfully dishy novel-turned-movie about the all-time most impossible boss in the history of impossible bosses. This major motion picture stars Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. Seen the movie? Check out the book or the audiobook on CD.

Also in this collection is The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, a poignant, funny, outrageous, and wise story about a lifetime friendship between four Southern women. Hop on Overdrive to enjoy the eBook and eAudiobook!

Next, go on a journey of self-discovery with Eat, Pray, Love, a memoir by a woman who quits her job and travels the world for a year after suffering a midlife crisis and divorce. We’ve got the book, eBook, and eAudiobook (a great listen for your next road trip!).

Another tale of friendship, A Man Called Ove is about a curmudgeon who hides a terrible personal loss beneath a cranky and short-tempered exterior while clashing with new neighbors, a boisterous family whose chattiness and habits lead to unexpected companionship. Pair the movie with the book or the eBook.

The Zookeeper’s Wife is the real-life story of a woman who became a hero during World War II, working with the Resistance against Nazi rule. The book is a New York Times Bestseller, made into a major motion picture! Also available as an eAudiobook.

For Kids:

See the Movie, Read the Book Movie Collection Version 7 has some classic, fun picks for kids! Beezus and Ramona is a beloved Beverly Cleary story, all about a big sister who can’t stand her 4-year-old little sister, Ramona. Read the book (or eBook) or listen to the eAudiobook, along with movie night!

The Borrowers is the classic story of Pod, Homily, and their daughter, Arrietty (a family of miniature people) who live under the kitchen floor in a quiet, half-empty house and get their livelihood by borrowing from the “human beans.” Let your imagination run wild with the book and eBook!

Go on an adventure to Sweden, with Pippi Longstocking, a girl who lives with a monkey and horse – and without any parents. The book and eAudiobook will help you imagine red-headed Pippi and her animal friends, then see for yourself with the movie.

Beatrix Potter’s stories and characters have enchanted children for over a hundred years. Join Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten, Squirrel Nutkin, and Mrs. Tittlemouse on the screen, and in her Complete Tales book, eAudiobook, and Playaway.

In the movie Legend of the Guardians, young owl Soren marvels at his father’s epic stories of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole, mythic winged warriors who fought a great battle to save all owl kind from the evil Pure Ones. Pick up this epic story from the beginning, with The Capture, the first book in the Guardians of Ga’hoole series – also available as an eAudiobook and Playaway.

For Tweens and Teens:

Older kids and teens will enjoy this See the Movie, Read the Book Collection (Version 2), which takes the viewer on adventures, explores fantasy worlds, and makes us laugh (and sometimes cry).

It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still. Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist –books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement. The Book Thief movie is sure to make you want to pick up a good book! Also available as an eBook or eAudiobook.

Get your mystery fix with Paper Towns, a coming-of-age story centering on Quentin and his enigmatic neighbor Margo, who loved mysteries so much she became one. After taking him on an all-night adventure through their hometown, Margo suddenly disappears; leaving behind cryptic clues for Quentin to decipher. This bestselling novel will take you on an exhilarating adventure! Check out the book or eBook (also available in Spanish).

Ready Player One is for all you fantasy and sci-fi lovers. Taking place in the not-so-distant future, he world has turned into a very bleak place, but luckily there is OASIS, a virtual reality world that is a vast online utopia. Step away from the screen and get swept away with the book, eBook, eAudiobook, and – bonus – the original movie soundtrack.

Travel through space and time with A Wrinkle in Time, a classic story about young Meg Murry who encounters unearthly beings and goes on a grand adventure. Before being made into a major motion picture, this novel won the Newbery Medal and was adapted into a graphic novel. The story is also available on Overdrive as an eBook and eAudiobook.

Wonder is the story of ten-year-old Auggie Pullman, who was born with extreme facial abnormalities and was not expected to survive, as he goes from being home-schooled to entering fifth grade at a private middle school in Manhattan. Read the book in English or Spanish to follow along with Auggie’s thoughts and experiences. The eBook is also available in both languages: English and Spanish.
