Library District Statement about DACA and Support for “Dreamers”

Posted on June 18, 2020 by Library Staff in Library Blog

Today, June 18th, the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, declared the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) may continue. Today’s ruling is a win for democracy, and the success story that is the DACA program.

Our thousands of “Dreamers” contribute so much. Nearly 800,000 people over the years have participated in the program, which provides a chance for enrollees to work legally in the United States as long as they follow the rules and have a clean record.

More than 90 percent of DACA recipients are employed, and 45 percent are in school, according to one government study. They are our teachers, students, neighbors, and community leaders. Today, close to 30,000 work in the health care industry, and their work has been necessary in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. These young people embody the best values of America.

The Dreamers trusted our government when they chose to undergo the very arduous and expensive process of applying for the DACA program. While the program does not provide a direct path to citizenship, it does provide a temporary status that shields them from deportation and allows them to work and pursue their education. The status lasts for two years and can be renewed.

The Poudre River Public Library District supports the Dreamers. Now is the time to adhere to our long standing values of embracing diversity and creating opportunity for all.
